Spay/Neuter Wet Lab
What started as an idea from Dr. Sara White of SPAY ASAP came to fruition on September 25th as 31 Veterinarians, 22 technicians and 1 Veterinary Student hailing from all 6 New England states, NJ, OR and LA came to Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society in Springfield MA to attend the NEFHS Spay Neuter Symposium.
Saturday’s Day-long lecture, taught by Dr. Andrea Looney DVM * and Dr. Philip Bushby DVM, MS**, covered the topics of anesthesia and surgery. This lecture was immediately followed by a Dry lab in which attendees could practice various surgical techniques in a non surgical environment.
Sunday's All-Day Pediatric Spay/Neuter Wet Lab featured supervised, hands-on practice spaying and neutering kittens and puppies from local humane organizations. Sunday’s wet lab was attended by 18 Veterinarians who altered ten male pups, 23 female pups, 29 male kittens and 57 female kittens.
We are indebted to the many people who made this event possible. Surgery instructors for the wet lab included: Drs. Looney and Bushby; Sherri Therrien of the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society Community Spay Neuter Clinic; Sarah Murawski of Vermont Companion Animal Neutering (VT-CAN!); Sara White of SPAY ASAP; Amanda Goeman of the Animal Rescue League of Boston. In addition, Dr. Emily McCobb, anesthesiologist and Director of the Shelter Medicine Program at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, assisted with anesthesia for the wet lab patients.
